Breathe - installation for Dwi Setianto
With one week until opening and no available gallery walls, I transformed the gallery's storage room into an immersive, tunnel-like environment for two digital video works. The installation complemented the natural themes in Setianto's videos; leaves blowing in perpetual wind and water puddles reflecting moving life.
I created a tactile fabric tunnel using canvas draped from ceiling to floor, with dynamic folds and ripples that interacted with the projected imagery. The installation concealed the storage contents while creating an intimate viewing experience.
Canvas provided the necessary opacity for projection while remaining light enough for secure hanging. Its coarse texture invited touch, reinforcing the connection to Setianto's use of found natural materials.
Working in an irregularly shaped space, I reorganized storage to create two projection pockets. The canvas pieces were sewn lengthwise and allowed to pool at the floor rather than hang taut. Jute strings anchored the fabric using existing furniture and shelving, while fans positioned behind the canvas added movement.
A dark, moving tunnel illuminated only by projected video, where echoing sounds and shifting fabric immersed visitors in Setianto's world of quiet natural chaos and constant motion.
